Description
Story
of
Work
: This
work
is
one
of
four
purchased
by the
ISER
group
in the
1970s
when
it
was
known
as
ISEGR
–Institute
of
Social
,
Economic
, and
Government
Research
. At that
time
,
ISEGR
was
part
of the
statewide
university
system
.
Victor
Fischer
is
reported
to have
purchased
the
artwork
for
ISEGR
as
part
of a
grant
.
Senungetuk
and
Fischer
selected
a
number
of
prints
by
Alaska
artists
. With
monies
left
over
,
Fischer
commissioned
the
carved
works
from
Senungetuk
.
None
of the
artwork
appears
to be
signed
. This
work
features
a
hunter
in a
kayak
,
walrus
,
three
whale
tails
, and a
full
moon
to the
right
.
Artist
Background
:
Senungetuk
received
a
BFA
in
metalsmithing
and
woodworking
from the
School
for
American
Craftsmen
at
R.I.T
. in
Rochester
,
New
York
. He
received
a
Fulbright
scholarship
to
study
metalsmithing
in
Norway
in
1961
. He was
director
of
UAF’s
Native
Arts
Center
(1965-86)
and, as
arts
professor
;
Senungetuk
was
instrumental
in
developing
the
fine
metals
programs
in the
UAF
Art
Department
. He
retired
in
186
to
pursue
his
own
work
full
time
. In
1975
he
won
the
metal
award
in
Earth
,
Fire
&
Fibre
for
one
of his
two
accepted
entries
. In
1979
he had
two
works
in
wood
accepted
. In
1991
he had a
solo
exhibition
at the
Anchorage
Museum
of
History
and
Art
. He
retired
recently
to
Kachemak
Bay
.
