Machetanz
Artist
Background
:
Fred
Machetanz
was
born
in
Kenton
,
Ohio
in
1908.
He had his
first
trip
to
Alaska
in
1935
to
visit
his
uncle
in
Unalakleet.
He
earned
an
M.A.
from
Ohio
State
University
and
pursued
further
study
at the
Art
Institute
of
Chicago.
Later
, he
served
as a
Naval
Intelligence
officer
in
World
War
II.
He had his
first
professional
success
as a
writer
and
illustrator
with his
wife
in a
series
of
adventure
books
and
soon
became
known
for his
lithographs
of
arctic
subjects.
He
took
these on a
tour
of the
Lower
48
states.
In his
lifetime
he
received
many
honors
: in
1973
he was
awarded
an
Honorary
Doctorate
of
Fine-Arts
from the
University
of
Alaska
Anchorage
, and in
1977
he was
named
“Alaskan
of the
Year.”
Machetanz
died
at the
age
of
94
on
October
6
,
2002.
His
friend
and
representative
quoted
,
“It
is
definitely
the
passing
of an
era
up
here, as
Fred
was the
last
living
painter
who
could
paint
the
Romantic
period
of
Alaska’s
history
from
personal
experience.
He will
go
down
in
Alaskan
history
as a
great
fine-arts
painter
and also as a
great
historian.

This
is
one
of a
collection
of
36
Fred
Machetanz
prints
donated
to
UAA
by
Alaska
state
senator
Arliss
Sturgulewski
in
2012.
Various
departments
went
through
an
application
process
to be
awarded
prints.
This
print
was
awarded
to
Land
Management
;
it
resides
on the
second
floor
of the
Bragaw
Office
Building
in
room
205.
Size

is

3/4".
